Ammonites (Gastropod)

The sea reptile (AM uh nyte, which means "coiled horn"was an air-breathing animal. This invertebrate creature looked somewhat like and is the ancestor or the octopus and the squid, except its body was covered by a coiled chambered shell. Ammonites first appeared in the Permian Period, 250 million years ago and flourished throughout the Mesozoic Era. Many had ornate ribs and markings on the outsides of their shells. By the end of the Cretaceous Period, changes in geography had affected them and ammonites were completely wiped out.

Pink Gastropods

Gastropod (also called univalves) are a type of mollusk that have a single valve ( a shell, which is sometimes reduced or even absent) and a muscular foot. There are over 90,000 species of gastropods worldwide, both in the water and on land. Some gastropods include snails, whelks, and slugs.

All Gastropods include snails and slugs. Most gastropod have a single, spirally coiled shell. Some snails may even have a plate that closes the gastropods opening which is called operculum.

Gastropods has a muscular foot used for creeping slowly in most places. Some gastropods feet are actually used (modified) for swimming and burrowing. Gastropods are found worldwide.

Habitats: They can be found in saltwater, freshwater, tropical, rainforests, mountains, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and in wetlands i.e. marshes, bogs,a ads swamps.

Fossil Sand Tiger Shark Teeth

Sharks can shed many thousands of teeth throughout their lifetime. In order for these teeth to fossilize, they must sink the seafloor and be quickly covered by sediment. Rapid burial is important for fossilization for a number of reasons. First, the sediment acts to protect the teeth from the weathering, abrasion, and scavenging that could occur if they were exposed to open water and currents.

Secondly, burial also limits exposure to oxygen and bacteria which are responsible for decay. The process of fossilization is a slow one that usually takes thousands of years. In the case of shark's teeth, they are preserved through a process known as permineralization. Which occurs as water seeps down through the sediments and over the teeth. This water carries different minerals in it that are deposited into open pore spaces in the teeth. The most common minerals are silica and calcite but other local minerals are deposited as well.

Fossil Coral

Fossil coral is a natural stone that is formed when ancient coral is gradually replaced with agate.

Corals have been growing in the oceans around the world for almost 500 million years. The corals thrived in warm shallow marine waters and over time were buried in sediments as the land surface was juggled by crustal plate movements or the oceans rose and fell. Temperature and pressure from compaction during burial, resulted in those deposits, in time, becoming rock and part of the present day geological record.

The oldest fossil corals are from the Ordovician period, over 450 million years ago. Corals are marine animals with a sac-like body, mouth, tentacles and skeleton. It is the skeleton that survives in the fossil record. Corals may be solitary or found in large colonies.

Orthoceras (Sea Squid)

Orthoceras was an ancient mollusk that lived more than 400 million years ago. The name means straight horn, referring to the characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid.
